Ivan Rabb

Date of Birth: Feburary 4, 1997

Position: Power Forward

College: California

Measurements: 6’10, 220 lbs

Strengths:

Ivan Rabb is a talented power forward with, still, a lot of potential. He can run the floor well, is a very solid rebounder, and has some good bounce. In the video below, you can see all of these strengths:

Out of those three main components of Rabb’s game, his greatest strength is his rebounding. As you can see from the video above, Rabb is able to use his length and athleticism to out-rebound the opposition. This resulted in an average of 10.5 rebounds per game.

Rabb likes to play around the rim offensively. He shot 67.2% at the rim, the best mark on the team. He showed us a bit that he can spread the floor, like a lot of big men in the draft this year. While we wait until we can say for sure that he is capable of consistently hitting the mid-range jumper, he should still be a serviceable rim-runner.

Weaknesses:

Ivan Rabb’s main weakness is his lack of confidence. Too often in big games, Rabb would vanish on the offensive end. Cal was not a team with enough scoring threats to award him the opportunity to do that.

Offensively, Rabb often seemed unsure of himself. He isn’t skilled enough on the block to get a bucket in an isolation post-up so he’d instead revert to taking a tough jumper. That resulted in a shooting mark of 35.9% on 2-point jumpers that isn’t too attractive.

Another weakness in Rabb’s game is his rim-protecting ability. He only had 31 total blocks this year with just 14 of them coming at the rim. 14 blocks at the rim will not convince any NBA team that Rabb can be a rim protector at the next level.

Risks:

Ivan Rabb had a huge let-down of a sophomore season at Cal. He had shot just about 62% from the field in his freshman season, but that mark significantly dropped to 48% in his 2nd season. Teams hate inconsistency from young kids. Lots of teams had Rabb high on their boards last year and there is no doubt that he definitely did not improve his stock in his sophomore season. The team selecting him will take the risk that this past year for Rabb at Cal was simply a sophomore slump and that he will be returning to his freshman year form.

Interesting Stat:

Ivan Rabb was the only player in the Pac-12 this year to have a DRB% above 25% and a ORB% above 10%. (Minimum of 300 REB)

Comparison:

Tristan Thompson

I feel as though this is a pretty accurate comparison for Ivan Rabb. Tristan Thompson is a terrific rebounder for the Cavs and can play the 4 or 5. TT isn’t much of a threat offensively and doesn’t do too much in terms of rim protecting, but is still a very solid player for Cleveland. Ivan Rabb has the potential to be that same type of player. What Rabb will need to do to get to Thompson’s level is get in the gym and get bigger. If he does put on some size and continues to develop that mid-range jumper he could very well make an even bigger impact than Thompson for a team.

Draft Prediction:

Between Picks 15 and 20
