Isaiah Thomas ties Celtics record

When your name is in the same sentence as Larry Bird, you have done something special.

Isaiah Thomas is the beat to the Celtics offensive drum and has been a scoring machine in 2015-16. Thomas has scored 20 or more points per game in the 13 games played in the month of March. He was the Celtics leading scorer in each of those games. The Celtics went 7-6 during that span.

The last time Isaiah Thomas didn’t lead the Celtics in points in a single game was Feb. 29 vs the Utah Jazz. Jae Crowder led the Celtics with 22 points, four more than Isaiah Thomas.

In 1987-88, Larry Bird averaged 29.9 points, 6.1 assists and 9.3 rebounds per game. Bird was shooting 52.7% from the field and 41.4% from the three-point line, per basketball-reference.com. He also had the luxury of having Robert Parish, Dennis Johnson, Kevin McHale and Danny Ainge as teammates.

Thomas is averaging 22.3 points, 6.3 assists and 3 rebounds per game this season, per ESPN.com. He doesn’t have the luxury of playing next to Parish, Johnson, McHale and Ainge, but he plays on a team that plays team basketball just like in 87-88.

What helped Thomas reach these scoring totals is the absence of Jae Crowder. Crowder injured his ankle March. 3 against the Houston Rockets. He is still out but expected to return tomorrow night against the Portland Trail Blazers.

If Thomas leads the Celtics in scoring tomorrow night he will break the Celtics record for most consecutive games led in scoring. In one game this season against the Trail Blazers, Thomas went off scoring 30 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists. He also shot 55% from the field and 50% from the three-point line, per ESPN.com. That game against Portland started this leading scoring streak.

Isaiah Thomas has been the perfect Celtic in his year and a half on the team. He may be little, but he is fearless.
