Even for a small college, basketball is big at St. Bonaventure University. Win or lose, the “Wolfpack” is rowdy, heckling the other teams bench while cheering our own. This is year has been no different. However, this years Bonnies men’s and women’s teams have played well. Actually, they have played great.

The women’s team has started off the season 16-2 (5-0 in the Atlantic 10), including a 15 game winning streak. With the way they have played this season, the Bonnies have earned national attention. They recently received three votes in the Top 25 Poll, but are currently unranked. With more wins comes more votes, and the women’s team has showed no signs of slowing down.

The last time they received any votes was the 2011-2012 season. They finished  #23 in the final poll and appeared in the Sweet 16 in the NCAA tournament. This team looks like they can make a similar or even better run this season.

Senior Katie Healy and sophomore Miranda Drummond lead the team in scoring with 14.7 points and 12.1 points per game, respectively. It is also their defense that has been leading the charge. They only allow 52.8 points a game which is 13th in the nation. The next game for the women’s is tomorrow as they travel to A-10 rival Dayton.

The men’s team also found success this season with a 12-4 record (4-1 in the A-10). They are led by the trio of Dion Wright, Marcus Posley and Jaylen Adams. Their “Big 3” is currently averaging close to 52 points per game, which is the highest scoring trio in all of Division-1 basketball.

Even role players like Nelson Kaputo, Denzel Gregg (peep the vine above) and Derrick Woods have made contributions to this team all season. With Jordan Tyson returning from a wrist injury, the Bonnies now have a paint presence. Tyson gives head coach Mark Schmidt depth and talent at every position. Their talents will be tested tonight against Dayton, who is tied with the Bonnies for second place in the Atlantic-10.

Watch out for St. Bonaventure, both the men’s and women’s team. They have makings of being a sleeper team come later in the season. It helps to play in one of the craziest arenas in all of college basketball.
