The other night Russell Westbrook did the unthinkable. Reaching 42 triple-doubles on the season, breaking the record previously held by Oscar Robertson was something a lot of people thought they would never witness. Well, Westbrook overcame that hurdle that was set back in the 1961-1962 season, writing his own story in the history books.

Russell Westbrook is now averaging 31.9 points, 10.4 assists, and 10.7 rebounds per game this season. His numbers are unparalleled as he’s going to be the first player to average a triple-double since Robertson himself. In a league full of elite talent, Westbrook has ascended himself with a remarkable year.

Coming into the season we all knew he would have a big load on his shoulders. He lost one of the best scorers in the NBA as a teammate so everything would be on him to deliver his team to success. Russell Westbrook capitalized on that opportunity by stuffing the stat sheet on a nightly basis but by also leading his team to success.

The Oklahoma City Thunder hold the 6th seed in the Western Conference with a record of 46-34. I didn’t believe this would be a playoff team at the start of the season. I wrote this team off after Durant made his announcement and for them to have the 6th seed says a lot about them and more importantly, Russell Westbrook.

He did everything in his will power to lead this team. Everyone else counted them out but he believed in himself and his teammates. Russell Westbrook is the true MVP. I believe he’s the most valuable to his team due to everything that he’s accomplished this season. Without Westbrook, the Thunder are close to last in the NBA, and I don’t have any doubt about that.

Many love to say his triple-doubles were stat padding and forced, but I say they’re pure heart and effort. The Thunder are 33-9 when he has a triple-double and 13-25 when he does not, which goes to show how much they truly mean to his team’s success. Westbrook puts in the hard work and his season displayed that. I’m grateful as a fan that I got to witness what he was able to accomplish this season. When I have a son and I begin to teach him about the game, you better believe that we will look at Russell Westbrook’s hard work and the remarkable season that he had.
