Goran Dragic likes the Knicks, Phil Jackson in free agency

The Phoenix Suns are currently fielding calls for potential trade deals involving guard Goran Dragic. Phoenix has expressed only the intent to re-sign Dragic, but his $7.5 million player option for 2015-16 will be declined and he will have the chance to explore unrestricted free agency next summer.

The New York Knicks, one of the teams expected to be making heavy pursuits in the free agent market next summer, are apparently on Dragic’s list of options.

Before Phoenix’s 99-90 win against the New York Knicks on Saturday, Dragic spoke openly about the opportunity to potentially play in New York.

Via Ian Begley of ESPN New York:

Every team that is going to be available for me is going to be an option,” the Phoenix point guard said before Saturday’s game against the Knicks. “I think New York, they have great base of fans, [a] great basketball organization [and] in the past few years they didn’t play so well. … That luck can change quick. It’s still too soon to think about that.

Dragic on Phil Jackson the assumption that free agents wouldn’t be attracted to joining the Knicks:

“Why not? He did an amazing job with the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers,” Dragic told ESPN New York. “I know right now he’s in a different situation — he’s not coaching that team. But still, I think he has enough knowledge — he won so many championships — that he knows what he needs to bring to try to get the team better.”

You have the great Phil Jackson on this team and then the fans are amazing. Every game is sold out.

Dragic said the Knicks circumstances “can change quickly”, referring to their 5-23 record this season. Marc Gasol is a free agent name said to be high on the Knicks’ wish list next summer. I’m sure they’d welcome bringing in Dragic, one of the young dynamic guards in the league.

Talking so candidly about free agency may or may not be a warning sign for Phoenix to pull the trigger on one of those many proposed trade deals before Dragic signs elsewhere next summer and they’re left with nothing in return.

If not, Phil Jackson will certainly now have Goran Dragic on his board.
