The Golden State Warriors should avoid the 2 seed at all costs

The Golden State Warriors haven’t looked like the league-fearing powerhouse without Kevin Durant. Their offense is out of sync, Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson are cold and it has resulted in multiple losses. With a record of 6-4 in their last ten games and 3 losses in their last 5 games, the Warriors are struggling and mightily missing what Durant brought to both ends of the floor.

This slump is something to watch because the San Antonio Spurs are slowly creeping up behind them. They are only 1.5 games behind the Warriors and have two games coming up against them on their home court. In addition, the remaining schedule for Golden State is nothing easy. As stated earlier, they play in San Antonio twice and they play the Houston Rockets two more times with one of those games being in Houston. They also have a matchup against the Memphis Grizzlies, the Utah Jazz, and the Washington Wizards who they just lost to a couple weeks ago as well.

Steve Kerr, coach of the Golden State Warriors spoke on his concern of the 1st seed hinting at not overplaying his guys just for the number one spot in the West (via SF Gate):

“We still have the No. 1 seed, but I won’t run guys ragged to get it,” Kerr said. “We have to manage this stretch right here and get through this week.”

While I get what Kerr is saying, I still believe that seeding is something to remain aware of. The difference between the 1st and 2nd seed is the possible matchup with the Houston Rockets/Memphis Grizzlies or the Los Angeles Clippers/Utah Jazz in the second round. While the Clippers and the Jazz are no slouch, they look much better as an opposition than the Houston Rockets.

The Rockets are a team that’s hot who’s going to attempt to shoot you out of the gym. There’s no doubt in my mind that the series would go seven games and with the possibility of the Warriors not having Durant, I’m not sure if they would come out alive. It’s in Golden State’s best interest to keep the number 1 seed and have the Spurs deal with the tough battle that is the Houston Rockets. I completely understand the Golden State Warriors wanting to avoid injury and fatigue but they should truly avoid sliding to the 2nd seed the best they can.
