Frank Jackson, Duke Blue Devils

Date of Birth: May 4, 1998

Position: Shooting Guard/Point Guard

College: Duke University

Measurements: 6’3, 205 lbs

Strengths:

Frank Jackson is a flat out athlete. His measurables and his athleticism will allow his game to translate to the next level. He is also built solidly enough to be a shooting guard in the NBA. You have to remember, Jackson only had one season under his belt at Duke. Jackson averaged 11 points per game on 47% shooting and 75% from the line. Jackson has also shown that he can catch fire from beyond the arc as he converted on multiple three-pointers in 15 games his freshman year. He has a high ceiling as he is a student of the game and will put in work to strengthen some of his weaknesses.

Jackson shows his athleticism in this put back dunk against UNLV from early in the year. You don’t see this from point guards all the time. Don’t forget Jackson was the winner of the McDonald’s All-American Dunk Contest.

Weaknesses:

Jackson will definitely need to improve his court vision. During his stint at Duke, he only produced 61 assists to 43 turnovers. He won’t be able to be the main scorer or producer for a team and he will definitely need to work on his own shot creation. On the other side of the ball he has a good build to be able to learn to be a strong defender but he will need to improve his lateral quickness. He could struggle against taller two guards and elite point guards due to his lack of height and lateral quickness. I think a lot of these weaknesses all tie into the fact that he only played in 36 collegiate games, coming off the bench in a majority of them. He will just need to play a lot more basketball.

Risks:

At Duke, you didn’t see enough of Jackson to be sold that he is going to translate into a starter on an NBA team. He clearly has the intangibles and the skills to become a very good player in this league but a lot of his talent still remains a question mark. Even if he slips into the second round of the draft he has a better upside to become a steal rather than a bust. Not yet being a consistent three-point shooter puts him at the risk that if he loses his athleticism sooner than later he would struggle to score in the NBA.

Interesting Stat:

Frank Jackson took 60% of his shots from the perimeter in the half court. Jackson made 39% of his three-point attempts over the span of 5.7 attempts per 40 minutes pace adjusted last season.

Comparison:

Victor Oladipo

Oladipo and Jackson are both combo guards who excel at slashing to the rim with the ability to finish those drives. Both guards have incredible athleticism and like Oladipo, Jackson can be the primary ball handler when needed although neither of them will be counted on as the number one. Both players can be streaky from beyond the arc but when Jackson gets hot he has the ability to be counted upon from downtown.

Draft Prediction:

Between picks 25-30.
