Over the summer, Minnesota Timberwolves point guard Derrick Rose announced he was starting his own scholarship called the The Rose Scholars. Rose is encouraging high school students to pursue their dreams of college by awarding over $400,000 in tuition money through the program.

Last week, Alberto Ruiz won $10,000 for his college education at Middle Tennessee State University, and on Monday morning, Gabriel Lee won up to $200,000 for his education at Michigan State University.

Derrick Rose, the youngest MVP in NBA history, has a long tradition of giving back to those in need. In 2014, Rose donated $1 million to After School Matters, a Chicago charity that arranges out-of-school apprenticeships for teens. The 30-year-old also donated $7,000 to a man walking from Chicago to Washington, D.C., to help stop Chicago’s gun violence and has paid for multiple funerals in his hometown of Chicago.

Rose re-signed with the Timberwolves in the offseason on a one-year deal worth only $2.3 million, but the explosive guard has made a ton of money during his NBA career and also has the lucrative Adidas contract at his disposal. As a result, Rose and his camp have the funds to help people less fortunate than him and they have never shied away from being active in the community.
