Why I don’t like DeMarcus Cousins joining Golden State

The NBA world exploded when it was announced that DeMarcus Cousins signed a one-year deal with the Golden State Warriors. I can’t remember a time like this in history when everyone was so up in arms about an NBA signing. It wasn’t even this bad when Kevin Durant signed with Golden State just two years ago. However, the narrative surrounding this signing is how unfair it is and how lopsided things are. There’s been so much hate and so much praise at the same time towards the Warriors for pulling this off but I’m not a fan.

When it comes to basketball and his fit on the court, obviously it makes all the sense in the world. Cousins has immense talent. He’s an all-around big that can contribute in multiple ways. You need a bucket in the paint, he’s got it. Pick and pop, there might not be anyone better at the forward/center position. Rebounding, he dominates at that as well and let’s not forget, he’s a very underrated passer.

When you think of Golden State’s system and their style of play, he provides everything that they’ve been missing at the center position for quite some time. With that being said, it’s his attitude and antics that make me question this signing.

Cousins has quite the reputation around the league in regards to his attitude. He has been labeled a cancer in the locker room on previous teams. Technical fouls, fights, arguments and things of that nature have been things that have followed Cousins wherever he’s been.

When you think of the Warriors, that type of personality and attitude doesn’t really mesh well. They have a tight-knit group and a system of guys who are humble and are willing to put the team first. Yes, Draymond Green gets into a fair amount of tiffs with opponents but no one ever questions if he’s a team guy.

I worry if Cousins can take the back seat to four other guys. Is he willing to only get a few shot attempts on various nights? Is he okay with possibly sitting out during the four quarter because of Golden State’s deadly small ball lineup?

When Cousins is unhappy, things begin to go south. That type of drama can truly disrupt a team and a locker room which is something that the Warriors haven’t seen throughout this remarkable run. Plus you have to consider that a possible locker war could turn guys off that you possibly want to re-sign come next off-season. Yes, winning heals all but when things aren’t going his way personally and he’s not the key guy as he once was, can Cousins handle that?

People can change and I’m not saying Cousins isn’t capable of that but this is a huge risk for the Warriors in my opinion. From a basketball perspective, Cousins is the perfect fit. But when you consider personality and attitude, I’m not sure if this was a good decision.
