The Phoenix Suns might have displayed the worst possession of defensive basketball that I’ve ever seen. It’s one thing to miss an assignment, fail to rotate, or not communicate but this possession was on a whole new level.
It was a disgrace to basketball and that might sound harsh to some but that kind of effort at the professional level is mind-boggling. Watching this play, you’ll see Marcus Smart of the Boston Celtics get an open shot. He misses and gets his own rebound. Not only do the Suns give up the offensive rebound but they give up on the rest of the play.
Smart shoots the ball again and the Celtics fail to get the rebound. Al Horford proceeds to get the ball and he knocks down the open jumper. What makes this play so cringe-worthy is the lack of effort and heart that the Suns displayed. They didn’t bother contesting shots or going after any rebounds. The crazy thing about this play is that Devin Booker had the audacity to slam the ball in anger after Horford’s shot went through the hoop.
No, Mr. Booker, I’m not having it! You and your teammates lost your right to be angry. When you fail to put forth the effort, you have to live with the results. All you see are guys in white jerseys standing around and watching the ball. When watching this, you understand why Phoenix is ranked at the bottom in defensive rating and 6th from the bottom in overall record.
The one and only teaching moment from this play is how to not work hard. Heart, effort, and hard work are all things that can’t be taught. If you don’t have it, you just don’t have it. Therefore, if you’re not willing to give it your all then don’t bother lacing them up.
