On Monday, U.S. President Donald J. Trump called off a White House event that was set for Tuesday to honor the Philadelphia Eagles, winners of this year’s Super Bowl.

President Trump has been critical of the NFL and it’s players for allowing players to kneel during the U.S. National anthem to protest social injustice, including police brutality toward African-Americans.

Recently the NFL instituted a new policy mandating that players must stand for the anthem or can sit in their respective locker rooms while it is played.

This is not the first time that President Trump has had run-ins with sports leagues and their championship teams though. Golden State Warriors guard, Steph Curry was asked whether he and his teammates would visit the White House to celebrate winning their 2017 NBA Championship.

Curry was adamant in expressing his disinterest: “I don’t want to go,” he said.

“We don’t stand for basically what our President has – the things that he’s said and the things that he hasn’t said in the right times, that we won’t stand for it,”

President Trump later tweeted that the Warriors were disinvited.

After Trump’s tweet, Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James ran to Curry’s aide stating: ‘U bum  already said he ain’t going! So therefore ain’t no invite. Going to White House was a great honor until you showed up!’

“I feel like every American should get a chance to go to the White House,” retired NBA player, Craig Hodges told me on Scoop B Radio.

“This is what you pay taxes for. You know, so you get a chance to see it and at the same time, I feel like it is a chance for you to go and air your grievances with the top man.”

Hodges was blackballed by the NBA after he handed a letter to former U.S. President George H.W. Bush during the Bulls’ championship visit to the White House in the 90s. The contents of the letter, according to Hodges made President Bush aware of  the mistreatment of poor people and people of color in the United States.

The flag, the White House, Colin Kaepernick….it’s been a cyclical topic that has gone on and on and on. Reminiscent of the TV show Lamb Chop. If you’re not familiar with the show: shame on you!

So with this debate, we turn to one of the most vocal voices in sports, television:  Cris Carter.

“Every bully that you know, every street corner, every project, every country bumpkin, every dude you know; they are in the NFL,” Carter said to students during a Q & A at TheBlackManCan Institute in Manhattan.

Cris Carter’s rant begins at the 12:53. Video was provided by Eric Salvary of House of Boom .

“So now you tell me that if guys don’t observe the national anthem they are not going to able to play? Well we’ve been accepting guys who have been convicted of murder, but now you’re telling me I can’t exercise my right as a United States citizen?  You’d much rather have that? What about the guys who have committed sexual assault that are playing in the NFL and nobody has said nothing? But no one is thinking of dropping out, even when they have violated someone’s daughter and people don’t care. But now all of a sudden, we’re that patriotic about that flag. Well let me tell you the truth about the flag: The NFL has a deal with the military and that’s why the flags are out there. So the military is paying the NFL, millions of dollars every year. So now they are getting ready to make it a requirement for us. Well, we are getting ready to do something. We are not going to honor that; it’s because we are in partnership–the owners and the players, everything’s collective bargaining; we got a union. Oh, y’all gonna have a secret meeting and change it without us? So I stand with the player, I kneel with the players, it’s not in disrespect to the flag.”

The eight-time Pro Bowl wide receiver and NFL Hall of Famer sounded off on everything imaginable regarding the NFL and civil rights.

“I’ve been disrespected my whole life, white people have never said nothing about that,” said Carter.

“So now, people are more patriotic than us because the people on our streets are being killed, people being harassed, people being arrested. I got family, what am I going to tell them? I had to buy my mom an ‘NFL mom’ licence plate, so people knew not to harass her. So what am I supposed to tell them? To keep getting your brains beat out?  Keep watching them videos? Look at Sterling Brown he a successful guy in the suburbs. Now you tell me a white person is going to pull in to CVS and end up being tazed? No it won’t happen to them. It only happens to us. So I support the players. I’m glad they are doing what they are doing. And people keep getting it twisted that these owners are more patriotic than these black  players. Well, no they’re not. They are being compensated. They are being paid and that’s the real truth of what’s going on with the anthem.”

Carter also weighed in on embattled NFL free agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick. “Colin Kaepernick should be playing in the NFL because there are a bunch of sorry quarterbacks out here that he’s better than,” he said.

“Blake Bortles in Jacksonville? He’s horrible! Josh McCown with the Jets? He smells like a baby’s diaper! We are talking about being the best. Put the best out there, then put the best out there on the field!”
