If you’re looking for a classic big man with a spice of how basketball is revolutionizing for the big man, DJ Burns is your guy.

DJ is a Class of 2019 6’9″ 250lbs Forward/Center who plays his high school basketball at York Prep (Rock Hill, South Carolina) is a force down low. DJ possesses great foot work allowing him to show off the array of shots he can get off in the post. DJ has more of classic big man’s game down low but has no problem stepping out to 15-18 feet to knock down the jump shot. He actually shows great touch in the post and in his jump shots for a post player his size. It is no wonder why Rivals has him ranked as the #66 player in the Class of 2019.

The scary part is that DJ is working on expanding his game out to the 3 point line. It will be interesting to see how many 3’s Coach Frank Hamrick of York Prep allows DJ to attempt per game. His jump shot will easily translate as well which will open lanes for teammates. What I like is that DJ truly can work as a roll or pop man to hit the jump shot putting a tremendous amount of pressure on the opposing defense.

DJ also can anchor a defense bringing a solid shot blocking presence. He is comfortable posting up in no man’s land looking for the turn around mid-range jumper over his defender. DJ is more than a capable passer out of the post allowing him to be a big man that averages a couple of assists per game. With all of the attention he is getting we caught up with DJ to talk with him.

Who all do you hold offers from at this moment?

DJ: Tennessee, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Winthrop, North Carolina A&T, Tulane, South Carolina State, Davidson, Western Carolina, College of Charleston, Virginia Tech, Western Kentucky, Oklahoma State, LSU, North Florida, South Carolina, Auburn, and Florida Gulf Coast.

What schools are showing at least medium interest who haven’t offered yet?

DJ: Maryland, Missouri, NC State, Texas Tech, Miami (FL), Central Florida, Vanderbilt, UCONN, and Virginia.

What are your thoughts about playing alongside fellow Class of 2019 Top 100 Point Guard Deuce Dean at York Prep this upcoming season?

DJ: It is going to be real nice. I am looking forward to it. I think we can be very effective in the pick and roll game.

What are your expectations next season at York Prep with all the young talent transferring in?

DJ: We are going to play some tough games and I think we are in a position to win a lot of them. I expect to have a lot of fun and win many games. With the new players coming in with what we already have, it is going to be great working together.

What do you consider your strengths and weaknesses on the court?

DJ: My mid-range and post play are my strengths. I am working on my ball-handling and extending my range behind the 3-point line.

Do you feel any extra pressure is on you being a top 75 recruit?

DJ: No, I don’t really feed into rankings. I just try to focus on my own game.

Is staying close to home for college important?

DJ: Playing for a school that values me is my biggest concern.

Any fellow Class of 2019 guys you’d like to play with on the next level?

DJ: I would like to play with guys who are dedicated, mentally tough, and want to win as much or more than me.

DJ is only 16 years old with two more seasons of High School basketball to work on evolving his game. DJ said he is working on getting quicker feet and trying to become the best athlete he can be which could be dangerous. The big man is an elite post player for his age with a world of upside. I am curious to see how the evolution of his 3 point jump shot comes along. I think attempting 1-2 3 point shots a game this up coming season for him at York Prep would be appropriate.

Also if he is able to work on his ball handling to make a move or two on the perimeter, it would help take his game to the next level. Either way I expect DJ to keep picking up major offers, especially from the SEC and ACC. We will keep you updated with the evolution of his game and any recruiting updates.
