Last month, Charles Barkley confirmed that he will not be on next month’s release of the NBA 2K 19 video game.

“Unless they give the retired players X amount of money, they cannot use my likeness,” Barkley told me on the Scoop B Radio Podcast.

“And I think I’m not even going to think about that anymore. They’re gonna give some money to the retired players, or they’ll never be able to use my likeness, period… My job is to take care of the older players.”

7-time NBA champion, Robert Horry weighed in on Barkley’s assessment:

I agree with him on the cost,” Robert Horry told me on the Scoop B Radio Podcast.

“And I can agree with him that I’m on like six teams in there in six different uniforms, so I need to get paid even more than them, so I agree with that.”

Horry also sees it from another lens: “I’m a fan of the game,” he said.

“It’s like being pulled in both directions. Being a guy who grew up playing games all the time and you like to see your image in it, I understand that you have certain images like Charles Barkley, Karl Malone, Jordan who bring in a bigger crowd.”

Added Horry:

“They also must understand that there are a lot of younger generations that don’t know who they are. That crowd is coming because of the [Russell] Westbrook] s and the [Kevin] Durant’s and of course King James. But you’ve just got to say it’s an honor to be in here and try to
compensate the best you can.”

Charles Barkley has been the missing link to the broadcast side of NBA 2K alongside his NBA on TNT cohorts, Shaquille O’Neal, Kenny “The Jet” Smith and Ernie Johnson who are on the game’s pregame, halftime and post game shows.

Speaking of Horry, did you know that he’s technically the first cover athlete on NBA Live?

Yes he was! He was on the cover of EA Sports’ NBA Live ’95

Although retired New York Knick, John Starks has the basketball in mid-air, Horry’s hand is extended and looks as though he’s getting ready to block it.

They might not consider me the cover athlete, but I consider myself the cover athlete,” Horry also told Scoop B Radio.

“It’s funny, I was showing my boy that was like my claim to fame; that I was on the cover of an NBA game. I had to show my boys that daddy wasn’t too bad back then when we won the championship in ’94 so it was fun.”
