Chandler Hutchison was regarded as a top-100 national prospect coming out of Mission Viejo High School in Mission Viejo, CA.

Four years later, the 6-foot-7 swingman is proving why he belongs in tonight’s NBA Draft.

After a breakout season at Boise State where he logged 20 points, 7 assists and 3 assists per game in 31 minutes for the Broncos, some draft experts have noted that Hutchison could potentially be drafted in the high twenties in the draft because his background is relatively unknown compared to many of his first-round counterparts.

NBA teams like the Utah Jazz made a similar mistake when they didn’t nab current Los Angeles Lakers forward Kyle Kuzma, a draft sleeper, in last year’s NBA Draft.  “I think that we’re in the same kind of conversation because of our situation; being a sleeper.” Chandler Hutchison told me yesterday while attending the Conversion Sports NBA Draft Gifting Suite.

Some experts have also compared their games. “I’m a Laker guy, so I’ve watched him play and seen what he’s able to do,” he said. “Being compared to him is not a very bad thing and with the success that he is having.”

So does he see the comparison? “Honestly I don’t think we play a lot alike,” said Hutchison. “Kyle playing the forward, plays a lot like the three and the four, you know all around from the three to the four.”

Added Hutchison:

“I’m more of a play-making type of role.”

Ironic statement by Hutchison because some draft experts have pegged Hutchison as a player on the Utah Jazz’s wish list. “I’ve been told multiple times that I will fit in that situation with Utah,” said Hutchison.

“With Joe [Ingles] and being able to compliment him… So I think that will be something positive.”

When asked about Joe Ingles, Hutchison was quick to point out his leadership ability and the Aussie’s 11.5 points per game and 4.5 assists during the Utah Jazz’s miracle season this year. “He’s one of the best shooters in the NBA,” said Hutchison.

“I think percentage-wise, he led the NBA last year. He’s a guy that can knock down the three, he’s a reliable player, he’s experienced and been in the league for a little bit and plays professionally. He’s been good.”
