Glen “Big Baby” Davis Shares Emotional Experience of Depression Before Joining BIG3

Over the weekend the BIG3 concluded their second season with team Power winning the championship against 3’s Company at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Led by head coach Nancy Lieberman and former NBA-ers like Cuttino Mobley, league MVP Corey Maggette, and Glen “Big Baby Davis”, the team’s postgame presser after the championship game was full of laughs, cries, stories, and gratitude.

Big Baby entered the presser with a bottle of champagne in hand — the life of the party. But when he had his first chance to speak, he opened up in an emotional way.

I’ve been going through a lot of crazy things lately.. it’s just not who I am.

(Ice) Cube, Clyde (Drexler), they stood by me. They knew how I was as a person. And this team stood by me. In spite of what everybody said out there, or what they think or what they might see. And I thank you guys for that.

Davis played his last NBA season in 2014-15 with the Clippers. In February of this year, he was arrested in Maryland on suspicion of drug possession and distribution. In June, he was indicted by Los Angeles prosecutors on a felony assault charge related to an incident outside of a nightclub in April. All of this happened after Davis was confirmed to join the BIG3 in January.

With the conversation of mental health and depression growing, this testimony from Davis speaks more volumes to the challenges professional athletes experience just like anyone else. Davis implied that being away from the game, and perhaps the way he went out, took a toll on him. Being part of the BIG3 seems to have more of a positive impact on him than just simply playing basketball again.
