During the NBA preseason, several young players stood out. Luka Doncic throwing on-point passes, DeAndre Ayton consistently protecting the rim on defense, and Miles Bridges finishing powerful dunks. However, another young player who discretely stood out in the preseason was Allonzo Trier.

Allonzo Trier is an undrafted rookie but played for the New York Knicks this pre-season.

Trier has shown why he should’ve been drafted by showing passing and scoring skills he always had at the University of Arizona. He has become arguably the most impressive player for the Knicks this preseason.

The Knicks are refreshed and Allonzo Trier is a part of that refreshment. On offense, Trier averaged 14.2 points per game, two rebounds, and 1.2 assists. A lot of the offense had Trier curling off screens, showing his ability to score in multiple ways. He also has performed a series of quick, tough step-back jump shots and strong drives to the rim finishing with contact. Trier shot nearly 50% from the field and made all 24 free throws in five of his pre-season games.

One play that stood out occurred during the Knicks pre-season matchup against the Washington Wizards; Trier gave his defender a hard dribble combo of crossovers and hesitation moves.

Allonzo Trier can be tough to guard with his quick handle. He’s shown it multiple times in the pre-season and it gets him past his defender. He’s always had a quick handle since he’s been in college and bringing it to this new league has been an advantage for him. Trier has shown so far that he excels on the fast break transition. He’s also showed glimpses of fast-break opportunities and executed them well, getting to the rim for the bucket or making the extra pass.

Trier averaged 18 points per game, three rebounds, and three assists his third and final season at Arizona. During that final season, Trier helped them go 27-7, as he played alongside No. 1 overall pick DeAndre Ayton. They were eliminated from the NCAA tournament in the first round.

With Kristaps Porzingus returning from his recent ACL tour, and the Knicks’ 1st-round pick Kevin Knox successfully playing in the summer league, the Knicks have a good opportunity in the Eastern Conference to show what they’re made of. Allonzo Trier will get a spot on this 15-man roster and he’ll deserve it.
